Dung Beetles Project Description
Dung Beetles [ten artifacts] In 2022 ten invited seven incredible people from around the world to come together and lead the work for nine months. They served in a role we affectionately dubbed the “Dung Beetles” since the idea was that they would be rolling around...

Intention
To dream into being a potency-saturated, dynamic form, shape, squiggles, function/mission, inter-connections and areas of rupture or leakages of ten-future, in relationship with what flowed through each of the dung-beetles, locally and trans-locally.
My own intention was to embrace the enticing invitation wholeheartedly, responding to what emerged, and come out in one piece. It was a big risk.
It was also very clear that we were kind of given the keys to the Kingdom during this nine months that we were doing the work.
About recognizing that there was interest, potential and possibilities. The intention was truly around like radical experimentation with, you know, what if we just ask some people that we feel have a shared vibe and understanding of some of the ideas and practices that. the intention was an open-ended inquiry into whether or not it would be possible for a group of people to prototype and build an experiment and figure out what was needed and define some decision making processes and priorities and do some work together that would help create the conditions and lay the foundation for the next iteration of the Organism.

Memories
Paying attention to the many niches and micro-climates in which one can be a dung beetle; mentoring from elder rocking chair beetles; sadness; laughter; exhaustion; joy/delight.
Creating rituals to actually work with monsters so they would not take over, but never feeling like that work, or the slowness of beetles and their conenction with the stars, was given enough time over the prioroties and deadlines.
Just like going through a lot of energy and a lot of like kind of, I don’t know, emotional balances around everything that was transforming. I remember just like being committed to being in a nine month transformative process.
I remember a lot of volatile up and down of feelings, emotions, responses from very, very excited in the beginning to be collaborating with the six other humans involved in the other non humans involved. I remember all of us efforting a lot to be present and to stay with the process even when it got very difficult. And then I actually remember feeling really satisfied with all the work we did and what we were able to advance despite all the challenges.

Essence
The sense that a temporary, transient collective of humans gathered to inspire and expire a vision of ten future, that both converged and diverged; now, witnessing the ongoing re-emergence of ten; the sense that finding the middle-path between structuring ten internally and allowing for wild co-creation with life flows is an ongoing experiment in postactivism.
I feel like the work that we did together in the the dung beetles phase was an intentionally time bound experiment that was about breaking old stuff down to get clarity about what needs to happen next.
Well, it’s dung. I feel like the dung beetles perhaps have not yet had enough time to decompose fully, to have an essence that could be identified especially as like, one thing. I think that it’s kind of like when the compost is not really broken down yet.

Arisings
The seed of a possible form for ten-future; deeper awareness of personal edges, and territories-within of underground ferment; personal reflections and learnings on working across differences; observations on how people may gather to collect nectar/pollen from the same tree and yet-possess unique, staggered relationships with the tree and their flowers.
What arose was a huge amount of compassion for people like us who are truly trying hard to meet the world differently, wishing for authenticiy and intimacy at work while we are still babies when it comes to dancing with ghosts, wounds, trauma, exile etc Many insights about power, leadership, kindness, authenticity at work arose as well. And, like in the myth, a function of generating “protection membranes” around me that allow me to work within diversity without collapsing to the confusion, and the pain carried in other bodies.
I also came away from it with you know some a sense of like I’m kind of I’m on to something in terms of being able to convene, organize and act in a values aligned way.
Despite all of the ups and downs and tears and laughter and frustrations and confusion and chaos, actually quite a lot of clarity came up. And what some of the challenges to that have been in the past and some really amazing friendships and some really amazing colleague ships and some really amazing support has also arisen out of that collaboration and some other. The other thing that arose was like some very good learning and clarity about the need for boundaries and guardrails and some kind of a container in order to do the work.
